Off the Derech

Off the Derech

Originally commissioned by Vogue in 2018, Off the Derech is a collection of images and interviews chronicling the lives of women who have departed from their Hasidic Jewish communities and sought to build new lives in the secular world. Hasidic communities have strict draconian rules and traditions to uphold. Departing from these traditions in service of living a more authentic life is a profound act of bravery that is not without consequences. Many people have lost touch with family or friends, while others have lost entire communities.
